Immigrants disembarking off a ship, 1892-1954, History.com
Ellis Island and the ImmigrantsFrom 1892 to 1924 Ellis Island processed 12 million immigrants to the land of freedom. Many immigrants came from countries that were going through economic trouble and religious disagreements. When the immigrants settled down in their new home country they decided that the hardships here of finding a new job is much easier than the hardships they would have faced in the other country they came from. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Emma Lazarus' Poem about Ellis Island, 1883, Statue of Liberty National Monument.
